Counselling With Bethany

Transforming trauma through body-centred healing

Bethany Bowman, BHSc, MC, RCC

Hi! I’m Bethany. I’m a registered clinical counsellor in the Comox Valley, Vancouver Island, BC, specializing in trauma therapy, therapy for PTSD and complex PTSD, anxiety treatment, and more. I am humbly located on the unceded traditional territories of the K’ómoks First Nation.

I offer individual counselling in Comox for adults who are looking for a place to find their centre. To heal. To feel more grounded and regulated in their daily lives, heal their relationship with themselves and others, and reconnect with their mind, body, and spirit.

No matter your struggle, I offer a safe, caring, and nonjudgmental space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and fears.

Together, we’ll dive deep into the challenges life has handed you and help you embrace what’s there with compassion and forgiveness.

One of my great joys in life is helping people find their strengths and move towards living in congruency with their true Self. I believe we are all worthy of a life of joy, authenticity, pleasure, and aliveness.

Somatic Therapy: Healing Through Neuroscience, Polyvagal Theory, and Attachment Theory

Somatic therapy is based on three core approaches: neuroscience (how our brain and body work together), polyvagal theory (which focuses on how our nervous system responds to stress), and attachment theory (which looks at how early relationships shape our emotional well-being).

By working within your window of tolerance, we help you process difficult emotions and sensations in a safe, regulated way. The window of tolerance refers to a nervous system state where we feel calm, grounded, and able to process emotions without becoming overwhelmed or dissociated.

Curious to learn more about the window of tolerance and how it works? Click here to watch a short, animated video explaining this key concept in somatic therapy.

When we work within this window, your body and brain can process and integrate overwhelming emotions, past traumas, or sensations that may have once felt intolerable. Over time, this process expands your window of tolerance, allowing you to better cope with life’s challenges without feeling overwhelmed.

The Role of the Therapeutic Relationship in Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy is relational. The connection between counsellor and client plays a crucial role in healing. In our work together, you’ll find a safe, nonjudgmental space where your experiences and emotions are fully respected. We move at your pace, supporting you as you reconnect with your body, mind, and emotions.

In our sessions, I may gently invite you to notice the sensations and responses in your body. This may feel different from traditional talk therapy, and it may feel vulnerable at first. But by doing this, we can regulate your nervous system in real-time, keeping you within your window of tolerance.

Through this collaborative process, somatic therapy helps heal the disconnection between mind, body, and spirit. Over time, you’ll find more expansive, flexible, and healthier ways of relating to yourself, to others, and to the world around you. Imagine feeling calmer, more confident, and able to navigate life's challenges with ease. Picture yourself responding to life with resilience and emotional balance, no matter what comes your way.
