What is Systemic Deep Tissue Therapy®?

Systemic Deep Tissue Therapy® focuses on changing holding patterns in the nervous system that have been learned due to stress, postures, and injury. We identify the compensation patterns of the body and precisely treat the deeper tissues in order to address the underlying conditions. Somatic conditions start from early childhood, and our daily habits lock the body structure into a certain posture. A chain reaction follows, setting up a complex compensation pattern.

SDTT® is a system of manual therapy that aims to restore the body’s optimal alignment by addressing muscles, joints, fascia, ligaments, tendons, nerves, circulation, internal organs (indirectly), and meridians.

Generally, ‘deep pressure’ seems to mean hard pressure, but ‘deep’ here is a relative and dynamic term. We refer not so much to hard pressure as to SDTT™’s ability to affect body structures three-dimensionally.

Muscles are like any other organ. They contract and relax. As long as they perform both these functions, there’s no problem, but when muscles get chronically disturbed, they eventually cause pain and discomfort. Dysfunctioning muscles can only use part of their entire mass, becoming partly non-operative. The part that remains operative is in ‘protective mode’. This presents as specific muscle weaknesses that can then create other muscle imbalances.

With SDTT®, layers of adjustments and compensations are worked through in an effective manner with assessment and treatment seamlessly integrated. This approach involves addressing a patient’s complaint in the context of their whole body, thus avoiding ‘chasing the problem around’ and instead, treating the source.

By returning a client'’s body to optimal alignment, they are returned to a state of healthy efficiency (dysfunctional/contracted muscles take up a lot of energy!) and even internal organs are given the proper space to breathe. We gradually work through the adjustments and accommodations the body has made to various postures, activities, injuries and emotional states over time.

It is common to have a ‘bruising’ sensation for a few days after Systemic Deep Tissue Therapy® treatment. Keep in mind your first session will be your baseline – it can only get less painful from there. Healthy tissue doesn’t hurt. Tenderness decreases as tissue health increases, meaning that with each session you will feel less discomfort afterwards as you steadily progress to a pain-free life.

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

The study of craniosacral therapy began in the 1900s when American osteopathic physician Dr. William Sutherland (student of the founder of osteopathy, Dr. Andrew T. Stills) carefully examined the bones of a skull and was struck by how the articular surfaces of the bones were not rigidly joined, but rather reflected shapes that were designed to allow movement like the gills of a fish. Dr. Sutherland showed that cranial sutures do not fuse in our lifetimes, but rather allow motion and “breathing” between the joint surfaces. Disallowing this movement causes physical illness and mental symptoms such as headaches, vision changes, nausea, decreased mental functions, and mood changes. With the contribution of many other physicians and osteopathic practitioners (most notably Dr. John Upledger), craniosacral therapy was developed to restore free movement of the cranial bones and return the body to optimum function.

Dysfunctional movements of cranial bones can be caused by external or internal forces, such as:

  • Labour and delivery

  • Fall or hitting the head

  • Head/face trauma

  • Braces or orthodontics

  • Sports accidents

  • Car accidents/whiplash

  • Chronic poor posture

  • Tension in muscles of the face or neck, clenching the jaw, etc.

These, among other things, can result in symptoms such as headaches, migraines, jaw (TMJ) issues, brain fog, mood changes, decreased mental function, sleeping difficulties, and more.

Craniosacral therapy is based on the understanding that the human body has innate intelligence and a healing capacity of its own. It is the gentle treatment of restrictions in the natural rhythmic movement patterns of the cranial bones, sacrum, spine, and connective tissues.
